Washington — OSHA has unveiled a new sticker intended to raise awareness of trenching safety by reminding workers to “slope it, shore it, shield it.”

According to the agency, 23 construction workers were killed in trench collapses in 2016, exceeding the combined total from 2014 and 2015.

Let's all keep in mind that trench safety includes the safe entry and egress of workers. Accomplishing this with the use of sloping and shoring or the use of trench boxes and ladders placed every 25 lateral feet will protect workers from the hazards of collapse or engulfment and ensure a safe work environment. What I would like to mention is that these trenches can exhibit the hazards of high radiant heat during these Hot summer months. Changing conditions should be monitored throughout the day by your Competent Person for Excavation and Trench Safety. Please take the time and effort to ensure workers limit their time in these hot trenches based on the temperatures they are being exposed to. Heat illness is an additional factor to consider when extended periods of work are planned. Entrants should rotate out for Rest, Shade and Water breaks often. Be prepared to discuss this with your workforce and plan ahead to keep workers safe. Prepare a rescue plan that meets the unique needs of the work being performed. Having and identifying personnel onsite with CPR/First Aid Certification should be a priority. Medical Aid and immediate Emergency Response to an injured worker should be reviewed by all affected workers before work begins. Be ready to respond when the need presents itself. Keep Each Other Safe
